Foods that can tame Kapha Dosha

Love food?! Eat more spicy, sour food and even start a meal with a small dessert to enjoy your food love healthily!

“Without proper diet, medicine is of no use. With proper diet, medicine is of no need”.  Ayurveda believes that most physical, emotional, mental imbalances are caused by dosha imbalances. And with proper diet and lifestyle changes, you can fundamentally balance the dosha and lead a healthier life.

The Three Tastes of Kapha Dosha – Pungent, Bitter and Astringent

There are six tastes in Ayurveda: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter or astringent.The tastes that work the best for balancing Kapha Dosha are

Pungent (Katu)

  • Katu is the hottest of all the rasas and it is made up of fire and air. These two forces combine to get those digestive fires burning! This leads to an improved appetite, stimulating blood circulation subsequently motivating the senses.
  • The Kapha dosha need this boost to get moving and remove any sluggishness. Also, the air quality of Katu is just what the [Ayurvedic :)] doctor ordered for drying up all the mucous in the body as Kapha tends to have sinus and congestion issues.
  • Pungent foods include: fresh ginger, hot peppers, onions, garlic, mustard and hot spices.

Bitter (Tikta)

  • Air and Space are the qualities that comprise this rasa, giving it cool and drying qualities.
  • Bitter foods help to gently detoxify and cleanse the body as well as the mind; assisting kapha’s sluggish and heavier disposition.
  • The Bitter taste abounds in foods such dark leafy greens, broccoli, sprouts, beets and herbs such as turmeric and fenugreek.

Astringent (Kasaya)

  • Air and Earth comprise this taste. Cool, dry, and light, the astringent rasa has a airy and drying effect, making it  ideal for Kapha.
  • The astringent taste abounds in foods such as: beans and legumes, broccoli and cauliflower, green grapes, cranberries, pomegranates, alfalfa sprouts, and okra.

The tastes to reduce or avoid – Sweet, Sour and Salty

Sweet (Madhura)

  • Sweet is made up of Earth and Water.Its heavy, oily, moist qualities tend to slow down digestion, as it will quickly increase Kapha when taken in excess. It’s often suggested in ayurveda for Kapha to eat small dessert first in the meal if needed J
  • However, sweet taste does not mean only desserts! The sweet taste abounds in foods such as carbohydrates like wheat, rice, grains, oatmeal, fresh/dried fruit and even dairy like milk, cheese etc.

Sour (Amla)

  • The sour taste is comprised of the elements earth and fire. can suffocate kapha with its slippery, grounding nature.
  •  Sour foods include lemons, limes, plums, vinegar, and pickled and fermented foods.

Salty (Lavana)

  • The salty taste, made of fire and water, tends to be a heavy and heaty. Its heating quality fires up the appetite and digestion. Kapha will be attracted to the warmth of salty flavors, but this flavor tends to promote more weight gain and water retention than what Kapha really wants.
  • Salty foods that work are Seaweed, salted nuts, olives and conserved/preserved foods.


Principles of food that help tame Kapha Dosha

  • People with Kapha dosha love food! Watch out for eating too much food and putting on weight, a typical kapha tendency. Kaphas need to watch the consumption of too much sweet foods or fatty foods.
  • Foods to eat: The best foods for Kapha dosha are – Warm, light, dry food, cooked without much water, minimum of butter, oil and sugar. Eat lightly cooked foods or raw fruits and vegetables. The food needs to be stimulating with pungent (spicy), bitter, and astringent tastes. Select hot food over cold food whenever feasible. Dry cooking methods (baking, broiling, grilling, sautéing) are preferable for Kaphas over moist cooking such as steaming, boiling or poaching.
  • Foods to avoid: On the other hand foods that are sweet (yes – desserts!), sour and salty should be avoided. Avoid deep fried foods. Keep an eye on the salt consumption also, which tend to result in fluid retention in Kaphas. Also avoid ‘cold’ foods in general – in temperature and energetically – take a glass of hot water instead of ice water.
  • Breaking the fast: Try hot ginger tea to kick-start your sluggish digestive system or take honey, hot water, lemon juice and ginger. Kapha breakfast should be hot (spiced cider, hot oatmeal or bitter cocoa with skim milk and a touch of honey). Avoid cold cereals, cold juice or milk, and sugary pastries. Avoid breakfast meats like Bacon, sausage as that aggravates Kapha due to their salt and oil.
  • Best Fats: In general, for Kapha dosha, fats are recommended in small quantities only. Pungent fats are better than sweeter fats – so mustard oil, sunflower oil, corn oil work better for Kapha dosha
  • Staples: In general, ‘lighter’ carbohydrates are good for Kapha- Barley, millet, corn, buckwheat, rye, quinoa, couscous and oats and whole grain breads (toasted). Whole wheat, rice and cooked oats should be reduced as hot cereals and steamed grains, in general, as they are too moist and heavy for Kapha.
  • Vegetables:Pungent and bitter vegetables are best for balancing Kapha dosha. . Some recommended veggies are – all green leafy vegetables, carrot, beets, artichoke, broccoli, corn, celery, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, bell pepper, green beans , peas, sprouts, tender radish etc.Avoid or reduce sweet juicy vegetables like sweet potatoes, zucchini, tapioca, winter squash etc
  • Dairy: Don’t overindulge on dairy foods. Butter, ice cream, and cheese are among the worst foods you can take as it aggravates the Kapha. Take warm low fat milk. Avoid heavy cheeses and milk shakes.
  • Meat: In small quantities – White meat, turkey or eggs works the best. Avoid Red meat and seafood as they aggravate the dosha.
  • Drinks:Spicy, Astringent or Bitter beverages work the best. Chai ( spiced indian tea) is the best for the dosha. Pomegranate or prune juices give you astringent tastes.  Juices of bitter and astringent veggies like bitter-gourd and Jamun are excellent for Kapha.
  • Fruits: Dried and/ or astringent fruits are great for Kapha. Good examples are
    apricots, berries, cherries, cranberries, figs, peaches, pears, prunes, pomegranates etc. Avoid fruits that are too sweet, sour or very juicy like avocados, bananas, coconut, dates, grapefruit, grapes, melons, oranges, papayas, pineapples, plums etc
  • Spices: All spices are good, except salt. Specially ginger tea or a pinch or ginger to stimulate appetite. Heating spices like  black pepper, cumin, mustard seeds, ajwain, saffron, hing, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, anise, fennel, coriander, dill, mint, garlic, nutmeg, tamarind are especially beneficial to this dosha.
  • Sweetners : Kaphas have a sweet tooth. So, cutting down on sugar is difficult for many of them. Cutting sugar is highly recommended. Take honey instead, but avoid taking more than a spoonful of honey a day.

Remember the golden rules in regard to food; eat only when hungry; eat small meals; eat your last meal at least four hours before bedtime; and eat food chosen from the food list from your Dosha. Meals should not be consumed when anxious, stressed, or depressed. If you are hungry before bed then take suitable fruits only.

Acidity – Why You Need To Look Beyond Antacids

Stomach acids help digest the food we eat by breaking it down for easier absorption. They also protect the stomach against infection causing bacteria. Acidity occurs when stomach glands produce excessive acid, leading to heartburn, nausea, cramps, bloating, belching (burping) and a burning sensation in the abdomen.

Antacids – Relieving Symptoms but not Addressing the Cause

If you are habitual of popping an over-the-counter antacid every time you have acidity, gas pain or heart burn, it will help you to know how an antacid really works.

Antacids provide instant relief by altering the pH balance in your stomach and neutralizing the stomach acids for a while. This process does alleviate the symptoms however it alters the stomach’s normal gastric environment. This puts your body into a troubleshooting mode and it works harder to restore ‘normalcy’.

As a rebound effect, the stomach starts producing more acid once the effect of antacid is withdrawn.

It is like pressing our hand against a running tap. If we try to stop the running water just by pressing our hand against it, it starts pouring with renewed force once we remove our hand.

Excessive and prolonged use of antacids has been known to cause damage to the digestive system. Antacids also trigger vitamin and mineral deficiencies as they block the absorption of minerals.

Fighting Acidity and Indigestion Naturally

The next time acidity strikes, give the antacid a skip and try one of the following herbs for relief. These herbs have been globally recognized for their effect on digestive health and have been traditionally used in treating stomach related disorders.

  • Ginger – Helps relieve indigestion, gas pains, diarrhea and stomach cramping. Chewing ginger before meals aids digestion.
  • Liquorice (Mulethi) – Its root is known to moisten and heal the stomach and the gastric lining. Reduces inflammation caused by oxidative damage.
  • Black Pepper – Aids secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, improving digestion and providing relief from gas and heartburn.
  • Long Pepper (Pippali) – Well known for its vitalizing and digestive properties. Known to stimulate appetite and build disease resistance.
  • Mint (Pudina) – Promotes digestion, soothes the stomach and relieves nausea.
  • Bael fruit (Bilva) – Possesses digestive and carminative properties, used in treating constipation, diarrhea, dysentery and loss of appetite.

Alternative medicine focuses on eradicating the root cause of an ailment and strengthens the affected body system from within. However, one needs to bear in mind that herbal treatment of any ailment also requires a change in lifestyle. Oily and spicy food, alcohol, smoking, carbonated drinks, non vegetarian food and even stress can trigger acidity. When your body talks, listen to it. It is as important as the treatment itself !



5 Herbal Remedies For Heartburn

Heartburn has nothing to do with the heart. It is a term used for the burning sensation experienced after consuming acidity-causing foods.

The food that we eat travels from the mouth to the stomach via the esophagus, commonly known as the food pipe. As we swallow, the muscles in the food pipe relax or open up to let the food move into the stomach and then close down after each passage. In some people, these muscles do not work properly. Due to this, the acids in the stomach move back up into the esophagus. Since the walls of the esophagus are not designed to tolerate acid, it gets irritated and inflamed. The acid generally causes a burning sensation in the upper abdomen, along with a sour taste in the mouth.  This condition is known as Heartburn or Acid-reflux.

1. Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)

Our stomach produces acids which break down the food that we eat into a simpler form. Sometimes, low level of digestive juices in the stomach delays digestion of food which may lead to heartburn and gas. Black pepper stimulates the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach and thus provides relief from heartburn and other symptoms of indigestion.

Powdered black pepper mixed with jaggery or buttermilk is a popular home remedy for heart burn.

2. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)

Known as Mulethi in India, licorice is used by herbalists to treat digestive and respiratory conditions. Its anti-inflammatory qualities render a soothing effect on the stomach lining and strengthens the digestive system.

Chewing on a twig of licorice is helpful in relieving heartburn and cough. You can also have licorice tea by making a concoction of licorice and honey in boiling water.

3. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum)

This mild herb is a popular garnish in Indian cooking. Several antibacterial essential oils (linalool, geraniol, coriandrol, terpenes and borneol) present in coriander seeds help in stimulating stomach acids, which helps in eliminating heart burn. Coriander seeds also have anti-spasm qualities and provide relief in stomach cramps as well.

Parsley, another herb frequently used for indigestion is a close look-alike of coriander. Parsley is an excellent source of anti-oxidants, vitamins A & C and folic acid. It’s anti-inflammatory action helps soothe the abrasion in the food pipe and relaxes the stomach lining.

Roasted or ground coriander seeds can be added as a spice in curries or boiled with water and taken as medicine. Parsley can be added to food while cooking or can be taken in the form of parsley tea.

4. Bishop’s weed (Carum copticum)

Known to most people as ajwain, Bishop’s weed does not need an introduction. It is a common practice in Indian households to consume ajwain and salt during stomach pain, acidity and indigestion. A herb with strong and pungent flavor, it provides relief from abdominal discomfort, stomach ache, gas, acidity and heartburn.

Ajwain seeds boiled in water renders a calming effect on the stomach. It is also frequently added to curries and vegetarian dishes made from gas causing foods such as kidney beans, green beans, cauliflower and fried snacks.

5. Aloe Vera (Aloe barbadensis)

In Ayurveda, taking aloe vera juice on an empty stomach is recommended for removal of toxins from the digestive system. Aloe vera enhances digestion and prevents acidity and heartburn. Its alkaline nature helps in neutralizing gastric acids and provides relief from heartburn and acid reflux.

Aloe vera juice or gel can be taken first thing in the morning or at night before sleeping for indigestion, skin disorders and any inflammatory conditions.

Along with these herbs, certain fruits and vegetables such as banana, apple, carrots and celery juice are also helpful in acid reflux.

Simple Tips to Avoid Heartburn

Identify the triggers – Some foods like chocolates, fried foods, citrus foods, vinegar, tomatoes, coffee or onions may trigger heartburn or acid reflux. If you are not sure what gives you heartburn, try and keep a note of the food items that you ate just before an incidence. This will help you in identifying and avoiding foods which that cause heartburn.

Avoid going to bed on a full stomach – It is advisable to eat 2-3 hours before bed time so that your body gets time to digest your last meal. Undigested food is a major cause of acidity and heartburn.

Eat small, frequent meals If you suffer from heartburn frequently, try to take small frequent meals, this may avoid over production of acid in the stomach.

Quit Smoking – Smoking weakens the esophagus muscles, allowing stomach acids to move backwards into the food pipe.

Drink warm water Warm water or herbal tea post meals supports digestion and helps flush out any excessive stomach acids.

Chewing gum If nothing is handy and you are out somewhere, chewing gum may provide short term relief as it produces saliva which in turn can dilute and flush out stomach acid.

How To Use Honey For 10 Common Ailments

Honey or madhu holds a special place in natural medicine for its long list of medicinal benefits.

This versatile natural sweetener has been traditionally used for alleviating numerous health problems. The curative nature of honey is attributed to the presence of amino-acids, vitamins (vitamin B2 and vitamin B6), minerals (iron and manganese), carbohydrates and enzymes. These nutrients also give it a better reputation as a sweetener, as compared to sugar.

Ayurveda considers this super-food ‘yogvahi’, implying that it has the quality to penetrate deep into tissues, when combined with other herbs, enhancing the medicinal properties of these herbs. According to Ayurveda, honey is madhu (sweet) in rasa (taste), guru (heavy) and ruksha (dry) in guna (quality) and ushna (hot) in virya (potency). It is known to pacify kapha and pitta doshas and aggravate vata dosha.

On account of its medicinal benefits, honey is commonly used in a large number of home remedies, some of which are listed below:

Honey for respiratory ailments

Honey is used as an effective natural remedy for cold and sore throat. A teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of lemon juice, mixed with half a glass of warm water taken several times a day can provide relief from inflamed throat and asthma. Alternatively, having half a teaspoon of ginger (powder or juice) and a pinch of black pepper powder added to a teaspoon of honey can alleviate this problem.

One can also take a teaspoon of basil (tulsi) juice to a teaspoon of honey to relieve sore throat and cough. Honey is an integral part of kadhas, home-made decoctions prepared using herbs and spices, for treating respiratory ailments.

Seasonal allergies can be treated by consuming 2 teaspoons of honey daily. It is considered particularly beneficial for treatment of cough, cold and congestion in children.

Honey for obesity

Drinking a glass of lukewarm water mixed with a teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice every morning on empty stomach, is an age-old home remedy for obesity. This is also helpful for purification of blood and general detoxification. Being a medium glycemic index food, honey helps boost energy levels without accumulation of fats.

Drinking a glass of milk or warm water with a teaspoon of honey added to it can provide an instant surge of energy, without causing weight gain.

Honey for digestive ailments

A mixture of equal quantities of honey and pomegranate juice is a useful home remedy for acid reflux. A concoction prepared by boiling licorice (mulethi) root in water, taken with honey, is beneficial for relieving heartburn. One can get rid of chronic constipation by taking a teaspoon of honey mixed in warm water every morning.

Honey for healthy skin

A natural anti-bacterial agent, honey makes a very effective home remedy for acne and pimples. A paste made with honey and cinnamon powder can be applied over pimples overnight and washed off next morning with cold water.

A home-made, skin-toning facial mask can be prepared by mixing honey with fenugreek powder while tomato juice mixed with honey can reduce dryness of skin. For dark circles, one can apply a paste of almond oil and honey to the affected area.

Honey for piles

A tablespoon of honey mixed with half a teaspoon each of mint leaves juice, ginger juice and lemon juice, taken daily can do wonders for alleviating the painful problem of piles. One can apply a mixture of a tablespoon of honey and half a teaspoon of mustard powder on external piles for pain relief.

Honey for mouth ulcers

A wonderful home remedy for oral ulcers is local application of a paste of honey with a pinch of turmeric added to it. A cup of warm milk with a teaspoon of honey can help relieve internal ulcers. The ability of honey to eliminate toxins from the body makes it effective for this purpose.

Honey for bed-wetting

An effective home remedy for bed wetting in children is a mixture of 2 crushed amla and a pinch of turmeric along with a teaspoon of honey given to the child every morning.

Honey for nausea

Ingesting a mixture of a teaspoon each of honey and lemon juice is a great way of getting relief from nausea and vomiting. This remedy is also beneficial for nausea and vomiting caused due to morning sickness during pregnancy.

Honey for wounds and burns

The anti-bacterial property of honey enables it to heal wounds and burns effectively. Application of raw honey to minor cuts and burns followed by dressing the wound with a bandage is helpful for treating the wound. It is also useful for relieving painful sunburns.

Honey for hiccups

A mixture of one teaspoon of honey and an equal quantity of castor oil is anti-spasmodic in nature, making it a wonderful home remedy for stopping hiccups. This mixture can be prepared and licked with index finger, every 10 minutes, till the hiccups stop.

Besides these remedies, honey also finds more uses for relieving everyday problems. Drinking carrot juice mixed with honey can improve eyesight. A mixture of a teaspoon of garlic juice and two teaspoons honey is a home remedy for controlling blood pressure.

A word of caution: It is best to use raw honey for these remedies. Ayurveda advises aganist heating honey or mixing it in hot foods. It should not be given to infants. Also avoid combining it with alcohol, mustard oil, ghee, or hot and spicy food as it may lead to formation of toxins.

Ayurveda associates a healthy digestive system with a healthy mind and body. Even modern science has linked the root cause of most diseases to ineffective digestion.  The function of the digestive system is digestion of food, absorption of nutritive elements and elimination of wastes and toxins from the body. Regular practice of yogasanas naturally boosts digestive health, massages the digestive organs and improves overall health by boosting metabolism. Here are 5 Yogasanas that can help relieve your digestion-related problems.

1. Triangle Pose (Trikonasana)

  • Take a deep breath and while exhaling, bend your body to the left, sideways.
  • The center of your left heel needs to be in line with the arch of right foot.
  • Stand straight. Place your feet about 3-4 feet wide apart.
  • Triangle-poseTurn your left foot out by 90° and right foot in by 15 deg.
  • Balance your weight equally on both the feet.
  • Try to touch the floor with your left hand keeping the waist straight.
  • Do not over stress your waist, legs or hips in an attempt to touch the ground.
  • Bend till you are comfortable.
  • Your right hand is to be stretched straight up, pointing towards the ceiling.
  • Both the hands should be in a straight line.
  • Turn your head to the right and gaze into your right palm.
  • Stay in the position for 1 minute, take a deep breath and keep your body steady.
  • While inhaling, return to normal standing position.
  • Repeat the asana on the other side.

Triangle pose stretches the shoulders, chest, spine, hamstrings and calf muscles and strengthens the arms, legs, ankles and knees. It also opens the hips and groins. It improves digestion, eases constipation and stimulates appetite. It improves the mental and physical stability.

  • Sit straight with your legs stretched forward.
  • Inhale deeply, and hold your toes with your hands.
  • Exhale and bend your body forward.
  • Try to touch the knees with your forehead or bend till your body permits.
  • Make sure that your heels, knees, calves and thighs are firmly touching the ground.
  • Keep your spine straight and breathe normally.
  • Relax the body and concentrate on your breathing.
  • Stay in this position till you are comfortable.
  • Slowly come back to the normal sitting position.

Seated Forward Bend pose reduces stimulates the abdominal organs thus balancing the hormonal secretion, improves digestion, relief constipation and refreshes the mind and body. It also stretches the spine and shoulders.

  • Lie down on the floor.
  • Lift both your legs up towards the ceiling at 90 degree.
  • Bend the legs from knees and press the thighs against the abdomen.
  • The legs should be joined together from knees to the ankles.
  • Clasp the knees with both the arms.
  • Lift your head and touch the knees with your chin.
  • Stay in this position for about a minute.
  • Breathe normally.
  • Slowly, bring your head back to the floor, remove your hands and slowly unbend your legs.
  • Repeat the asana for three-five times.

Pawanamuktsana relieves unwanted gas from the digestive tracts. This pose compresses the abdominal organs, improves blood circulation, and efficiency of internal organs. It improves digestion, and provide relieves from acidity, gas and constipation.

???4. Camel Pose (Ushtrasana)

  • Sit in the kneel-down position.
  • The knees should be hip-width apart.
  • Inhale, and put your hands on your waist.
  • Exhale, and arch back.
  • Look up to the ceiling.
  • Slowly bring your hands back and hold the heels with respective hands.
  • Don’t put your weight on the hands. Use them only for support.
  • Your weight should be shifted on to the knees.
  • Feel the stretch on the abdomen and chest.
  • Lower your head backwards.
  • Stay in this position for about 30 seconds.
  • Exhale, and slowly return to normal position.

Camel Pose stretches the abdominal organs, stomach and intestine thus creating space in the stuffed torso. It provides relief from abdominal cramps, constipation, bloating, gas and acidity. It is a good exercise to do if you have overstuffed yourself in a party.

  • Sit straight with your leg stretched out.
  • Bend your left leg and with the help of your hand, placing the heel of left leg below your right buttock.
  • Cross your right leg above your left thigh and place your right foot firmly on the ground.
  • Keep your spine straight.
  • Twist from your waist and turn your body to your right as much as you can.
  • Place your upper left elbow on your right thigh and your right hand on the ground behind for support.
  • Look over your right shoulder without overturning your neck.
  • Stay in this position for up to 8-10 breaths.
  • Return to the starting position.
  • Repeat the posture on the other side.

Spinal Twist massages the abdominal organs, vitalizes the large intestine, detoxifies the digestive tracts, and provides relief in constipation. It stimulates gastric juices and improves digestion. The twist squeezes the most important detox organ i.e. the liver, thus hastening the cleaning process. Gall bladder, kidney, spleen and bowels benefits immensely from this pose. This pose also regulates breathing, accelerates blood circulation, prevents urinary tract infection and calms the mind.
